LG’s popular Therma V range of air source heat pumps is usually specified to provide energy efficient heating for homes and commercial properties across the UK, so its specification at an ice rink might see a few eyebrows raised. But that is exactly what has happened at Gosport Ice Rink in Hampshire.

  • The Background
    G&O Refrigeration’s General Manager Rob Hedges: “Basically, ice rinks have a cooling circuit that is below the ice in concrete or sand. This keeps the ice cold. Eventually this will freeze the ground below it and cause permafrost. This has the ability to move any structure in the immediate area and can cause major structural problems over time.
    “Providing heat below the insulation ensures this permafrost formation cannot take place. We needed to provide heat below an existing ice rink by replacing the old supply and convert it to an ethylene glycol/water solution. This is a mixture that works well through an LG Therma V system. We selected the unit we have installed for energy efficiency and ease of installation on the site.”

    “It’s always good to hear of new and different uses for our equipment,” says Kamlesh Vadukul, Sales Manager, Heating Solutions at LG. “We’ve not heard of our Therma V systems being used for this purpose before but we’re always happy to open a new niche market for our equipment!”

    The solution
    Frost heave has always been a serious issue where ice pads are located on frost susceptible soils and operated all year round. Traditionally, heat recovery from refrigeration plant is used below ice rinks to provide a frost free sub base and prevent frost heave, it is refreshing to see an unusual approach, taking advantage of Therma V’s inverter driven technologies to maximise operational efficiencies with ease of use.
